Play 90 second soundbite of 'When U Say When (13" Single)' @ 'CD quality'
As the title suggests, this is a sort of in-house compilation crammed full of 'mixes', demo work, singles and live recordings. Main man and inspirational force behind Weak13, Nick Townsend, stamps his manic mark on these tracks. There's quite a variation going down here. It rocks along nicely with ear splitting guitar and bass work over impressive drums. Vocally there's some pretty frightening stuff here. Then, just as you get accustomed - something just a little gentler creeps in and makes the listener stop and think.
I don't have much information about line-up and their website still appears to be under construction so I just don't have a clue who does what. But, suffice to say, whoever does what - they're pretty good at it! I have to say that I didn't really relish the thought of reviewing this work but I have to admit that I've really got to like it. There's always something different going on - I never feel trapped and totally encapsulated in the 'metal'. These guys have really mixed it up here and the result is a tasty sampler of a very tight and qualified outfit. The expletives don't actually come as thick and fast as I'd expected. In fact, generally, there's not much to offend really.
Weak13 lay down some damn hard-core riffs and storm along brilliantly. Personally, I like Devin Townsend's work and there's a few similarities here to marvel at. Even down to the brilliantly handled instrumental 'World In A Cage' where they've taken it all down a peg or two. Very impressive.
'The Very Worst Of....' is a mind-numbing blast of 'metal' madness. It's got everything and more. Pulsating rhythms, grating, throat ripping vocals, riffs aplenty, variation, quality. It's got 'balls'! It rocks! It's got thirteen mind-blowin' tracks! And, it works! It really works!!
