Play 90 second soundbite of 'A Hymn For Salvation' @ 'CD quality'
A home recording that lacks a little in finesse and production technique none-the-less indicates that Violet Beauregarde can certainly write a tune or two. Instrumentally, Phil lays down some tasty melodic guitar work, generally keeping it simplistic but nicely tight and with the occasion injection of some impressively subtle and cool licks. Vocalist Clair flexes her chords and shows originality and a decent enough range but maybe tries just a little too hard to be different. I feel Clair should just chill a bit, get into the groove and let it come as naturally as possible. Without doubt though, this pair work very well together and show potential here.
I feel that as the gigs come in Violet Beauregarde will just get stronger and stronger as they build on their individual and collective abilities. But, I hope they don't just fall back into the normal scheme of things - it's their 'alternative' approach that currently makes Violet Beauregarde interesting and one to watch out for.
I'm suitably impressed with the self-penned material here - it shows creativity within its relaxed vibe, it's uncluttered and there's still plenty of room to build on things. It's still early days for this duo and there's still some work to do - mainly just honing the vocals and getting it really tight and just nailing it.
