Play 90 second soundbite of 'Head Like A Stone' @ 'CD quality'
Up-Lift are trying to make a difference by striving to come up with their very own signature sound. It's still early days methinks coz at the moment, although they show loads of potential, they're still not quite meeting that criteria. After saying all that, Up-Lift do have something very tasty goin' on but I can't help but feel that they still haven't quite found the key to open up their horizons. Here we have an EP that's very lo-fi and very raw edged to the point where you really have to fight to see below the, it has to be said, poor recording. I'm trying though and I still think that Up-Lift will get there sometime soon. 'You don't get owt for nowt' as they say and Up-Lift still need to invest a lot of time and energy into honing their craft. Writing don't come easy - these guys can obviously play well and have some good ideas - but, the seed now needs to be the songs and hopefully from that seed something much bigger will grow!
These four dudes are still young and impressionable - they've got all the basic tools at their hands and now they just need to look deeper inside, or they need to step back and look at their work from an outsider's point of view, with objectivity and open minds. Up-Lift show here that they can write decent enough songs and that they are trying to find that little something that'll set them apart from the thousands of indie bands out there - they're not quite there yet though!
Up-Lift sound like a band on a mission and I really hope they hang on in there and make it all work. I think they seriously need to think about taking themselves into a quality studio where they'll get constructive help with laying down their work; a few pointers and new ideas that may help them to maximise their efforts and skills and come up with that all important style and sound. Keep on rockin' guys - I hope you find what you need - I'm sure you will and then the real Up-Lift will rise up and win the day.
