Play 90 second soundbite of 'Maxalon City' @ 'CD quality'
Recently described as 'a monumentally original, alternative rock band', Tybalt are indeed just that. Each track on offer here demonstrates their originality with well constructed, hard edged modern songs. The excellent 'Maxalon City' immediately grabs the attention; a great opener which sets a high standard with its fine lyrics and melody. Superb use of guitar-synth effects provides a perfect backdrop against the guitars, drums and vocals. At first I thought this would be a difficult piece to better....but read on!
'Lines' opens gently before notching into a clever, up tempo piece. The verses have an Elvis Costello feel about them which are juxtaposed with hard rockin' chorus' and nifty instrumental passages; punchy and well constructed. 'Gestures Are Shallow' is another pacey number but with a totally different feel. Again it just shouts quality! 'Jean Reno/Negative Vibes' is my personal favourite though. Beginning gently , 'Jean Reno' is once again quality. An instrumental with a 'post rock' feel to it, it slowly and gently builds with a superbly catchy repetitive theme. This piece really shows how good Tybalt are instrumentally. I could see this as a TV or film theme - it's just a beautifully thought out work. It certainly works for me!! 'Jean' then segues into 'Negative Vibes' which has an aptly dark feel to it as it opens. Great lyrics, superb musicianship as it ventures into the heavier regions of Tybalt's musical armoury. Both sections of this medley are terrific - it's just a great piece of modern rock music.
Track five is simply entitled 'Bonus Track' and is an interesting compilation of several more facets of Tybalt's work woven together to form an intriguing album closer. If the first four tracks didn't show how different, how interesting Tybalt are, then this track certainly does demonstrate it.
Currently selling at gigs for silly money (just £2), this is little diamond of modern rock music. I can't wait to get hold of a ten or twelve track album by this band. Hopefully that will come with time, but until then I'll just keep enjoying this brilliant appetiser!!
