Two Timers

@ The Marr's Bar, Worcester - 14/12/03

Tonight saw the long awaited return of this dynamic duo to Worcester. Performing their unique brand of music in the blues vein with just a touch of skiffle and a hint of urban folk, Sarah James and Gordon Russell grabbed their audience the instant they took to the stage. The beautifully proportioned Sarah looked stunning once again and, as usual, Gordon was at his well presented and relaxed best.

Their set started with an old favourite that set the tone and feel for the night; the sort of thing that says 'hey, listen to us, you're going to enjoy this!!' As well as their well tried and tested material from earlier albums, Two Timers tonight gave us a rich helping of newies from their latest album, 'The Big Casino'. Introduced as "a work of pretty dark songs but still fun", they first gave us a song about love(?) in 'Killing Time'. Other new pieces included 'Edgar Allen Poe', 'Home' and the stunningly atmospheric and beautiful 'The Devil & The Deep Blue', the latter, I believe, being written about and dedicated to the late great Jeff Buckley.

It's quite amazing that two people using fairly basic instrumentation can create such a wonderfully interesting sound; but Two Timers do it - time and again, and extremely well. Gordon's supporting guitar work is cleverly simplistic and generates just the right level of backing to add weight to Sarah's great voice. A master of slide guitar, Gordon's laid back style is a real dream to see and hear and his almost nonchalant approach is in complete contrast to the bubbly Sarah's.

Tonight, their appreciative audience was held spellbound for nearly ninety minutes as Two Timers rocked their socks off! Two Timers, two personalities, one goal - to entertain and to enjoy. They did both with ease; a great act from two great people.
