Tusken Coalition

CD - Tusken Coalition

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Confrontation : feat. Duke' @ 'CD quality'

I never thought I'd be writing these words but, this 'self-titled' album from Tusken Coalition is an absolute joy to behold; taking hip hop to another level Tusken Coalition make the genre interesting and user-friendly. Superbly experimental whilst holding hard onto the hip hop tiller to maintain direction and focus, Tusken Coalition have opened my eyes to the possibilities within this all too often samey genre. And, I love it!!

I've never been a great lover of hip hop music, not because I don't think it's worthy but mainly because so much of it sounds too similar. I know some artists have tentatively pushed at the boundaries of the genre but I never really got off on the end result somehow. What Tusken Coalition are doing is turning the art form on its head through the introduction of a cleverly juxtaposed and well crafted cacophony of samples and sounds that form a pretty scary but impressive backdrop to what are actually excellent songs.

Tusken Coalition don't try to disguise the fact that they're British; seemingly, dialect rules within the musical ethos of Tusken Coalition and thankfully they don't try too often to be pseudo-American although there are still a few passages where they 'cross the pond'. Not unexpectedly, the lyrics here are pretty hard hitting and observational. Tusken Coalition deliver their words and music superbly but for me it's the stunning backgrounds that really make the difference and put Tusken Coalition ahead of the field. The addition of the 'aural cacophony' brings dynamics and depth to the genre; some of it's very dark, some haunting, some nerve jangling - but, it all works and just sets these guys from the Midlands apart from most of their contemporaries.

I'm not saying that Tusken Coalition have converted me to be a great fan of hip hop but they have definitely made me stop and think. 'Tusken Coalition' is a truly excellent hardcore album of fine songs handled with just the right degree of creative experimentation to set it apart from most similarly ilked releases. I love it, really love it!! Absolutely superb!!
