The Murder Of Rosa Luxemburg

@ The Marr's Bar, Worcester - 11/10/04

Another local (Worcester?) band getting good press and gigs aplenty I believe. Well I don't know if it was just me but I didn't totally get it tonight. As TMORL took to the stage they asked for the stage lights to be turned off. They then blasted their way through a very short set of their manic sounding material which I actually was really into (but could have enjoyed much much more!!). What let it all down was that although the mix of instruments was pretty damn good, the vocals could hardly be heard at all. I was disappointed with their no lights approach as the vocalist/front man obviously has great charisma and stage presence but he just couldn't be seen!! What's all that about then??!! His energetic contortions meant that mic technique went out of the window too.

Shame really because what I did hear I liked - what I couldn't hear I really wanted to and what I think about The Murder Of Rosa Luxemburg is now heavily influenced by the negatives of their set instead of the positives.

Instrumentally they sounded great and their unusual writing and playing style sounded pretty cool and well crafted. There was some bloody fine, intricate stuff goin' on but much of it was lost. Then to cap it all they seemed to bring proceedings to a very abrupt and unexpected halt and just walked off stage. Very strange - or is it me?? Am I completely missing the point?? Are TMORL trying to make a point, trying to be different. If they were, I don't think it did them any favours at all. Perhaps they don't want favours!! Who Knows?

Although my perception of The Murder Of Rosa Luxemburg was altered by their strange antics, I did hear and see enough to know that I'd like to hear more of their manic music!!
