Each song was preceded with a charming anecdote about its origin and about the many, big names, he has played with over nearly forty years as a professional. Names like Jeff Beck, Mama Cass, Rod Stewart, Aynsley Dunbar and many more rolled off his tongue, he is obviously proud to have been associated with these people.
Performing a back catalogue of oldies but goodies such as 'Eat, Drink And Be Merry (For Tomorrow You'll Cry)', 'Come Away, Melinda' and a wonderful version of 'If I Was A Carpenter' he had everyone hanging on to every word; he seemed able to re-invent the lyrics, to bring more meaning to words we'd all heard before but perhaps never related to until tonight.
His style is often in the vein of the old protest singer - but with such passion as he used his voice to perfection - loud then quiet - soft then harsh - building throughout to reach a crescendo, then..hush..! - what an artist!! His playing style too, is so sweet to watch - it all looked so easy and comfortable and with the twelve string you would have thought that there must be another guitarist somewhere off stage as its sound filled the room.
An interesting story about the origins of 'Hey Joe' told of Tim hearing an old traditional song which he researched and then revised way back in the mid sixties. Tim's version was then adapted to be the version that most people think of as a Jimi Hendrix classic. Tim then went on to do his, original version - once again building to a great crescendo followed by a brilliant reception from the crowd.
The final song, the absolute classic, 'Morning Dew' was introduced with reference to the events in America on September 11th which reminded the much travelled Tim that he was still an American. He proceeded to passionately and powerfully work his way through to the end of the song.
Although demanding more, the audience watched an emotional Tim Rose walk quickly and quietly off stage - his body language clearly showing the feelings within.
I don't know what it is about this man, but he just manages to get inside of you, inside your head - a brilliant night!!
