Play 90 second soundbite of 'Superfiction' @ 'CD quality'
Although I feel that it's all been overdone now, I can see why Tillmanns have gone there. This contagious and quite simplistic feel always creates interest - but it's almost too easy - that's how the 80's bands did it, never over-stretching themselves and just offering pure, infectious pop music. Of course it worked then; the music world was still trying to re-invent itself after the tumultuous and mega-successful punk invasion during the 70's something had to change (not sure it was a good change!). But, although that change and move in direction worked then, I'm not convinced that it works at all well now. Sure, there's always gonna be takers for it but, I really don't think that there's a real place for it in this age. Things have moved on far too much - bigger steps have been taken and most of us have gotten over the whole New Order thing.
I'm not saying that Tillmanns aren't good - they do what they do very well. But, I just don't get it! Why have musical skills but not use them in a more inventive way instead of simply plagiarising a whole concept twenty years after it blew itself out!! Sorry, but Tillmanns' 'Superfiction' doesn't move me at all! I'm sure Tillmanns will have their followers but I'm not convinced that they'll attract too many newcomers to the fold with their blatant 80's rip-off songs. There's nothing at all innovative or remotely fresh about what Tillmanns are doing - not for me I'm afraid!
