Play 90 second soundbite of 'Who Makes The Calibans?' @ 'CD quality'
The wonderful title of this work, 'Carrion Camping', gives you a bit of a clue to what's in store; don't expect anything approximating indie or rock...pop..metal..hip hop...blah,blah,blah! Seek it, find it, play it and just see if I'm right. The Vichy Government compose and perform what I can only describe as poetic social commentary against a backdrop of totally stripped down techno-music-box accompaniment; basically what appears to be a synth, a beatbox/drum machine (sorry if I've got that wrong guys) and not a lot else. The poetic lyrics are enhanced somewhat by an Irish brogue that makes this work even more compulsive.
In amongst the, fully justifiable, expletives you'll find two angry young men with an awful lot to say about their homeland, the World in general, the music scene, death, and all points in between. This is definitely not one for the timid or the easily upset. This is hard-core observational discourse!!
If risk-taking made the music moguls millions then they could make a killing with The Vichy Government's 'Carrion Camping'. But, that's not the case - is it? 'Balls', real big 'balls' is what's needed to take on a project such as this baby. Universal would need 'balls' the size of Jupiter before they touched this. Filthy Little Angels may not currently have the clout that the 'big boys' have but it's somehow poetic justice that this 'filthy little angel' of a work has been picked up by such a forward looking outfit.
'Carrion Camping' (I just love that title!) aint gonna set the world on fire - it doesn't stand a chance in this day and age. But, once again, if you like something outrageously different and you're prepared to gamble then get yourself a copy. The musically staid need not apply!
I, for one, will be 'giving this some' over the next few weeks. Interestingly diverse. Refreshingly avant-garde. Unashamedly intoxicating.
