Play 90 second soundbite of 'My Girl' @ 'CD quality'
They open with the superb 'My Girl'; with it's African-esque guitar intro this track is a real winner. It's a very commercial sounding piece; the chorus drills itself into your head as the African guitars vie successfully with punchy rock chords - a crackin' little piece of work. 'Albino Kay' follows; musically it's another catchy work but isn't quite as strong as the opener lyrically. Nothing wrong with this though - it grinds along nicely - would probably make a good 'B' side. 'Hey Ho!' is a much heavier rock work; it belts along superbly and feels just a little nu-punk. 'And I Don't Like You' slows things down; it has a touch of funky blues about it. Not my personal favourite but it does show the range these guys have got.
I'm not sure that the 'funk/rock' label does The Superband any favours. They certainly rock and the definitely mix it up. There's an energetic feel to The Superband - I'm not sure I'm over-keen on the name though - perhaps a little too pretentious. What I do like about this demo is the variation - a bit like eating a Neapolitan ice-cream with your eyes shut and wondering what flavour you're gonna get next.
So, great demo - it does exactly what it should do; it's well thought out and well crafted. These guys can certainly play and they're obviously quite capable of writing very strong material. Without doubt, 'My Girl' is the stand-out track, an excellent piece of work! It cries quality and would be the obvious choice for a single. Given the right sort of promotion, 'My Girl' should help The Superband on their very competent way.
