'Phoenix Soul' from The Spheres is a beautifully smooth piece of latter-day soul. Not just smooth but slick and cool; the undeniable soul vibe is superbly enhanced by an infectious and atmospheric guitar lick that follows the lyric line and adds a mildly rock/blues feel that's driven along by some well proportioned funky rhythms. Vocally The Spheres totally nail it; the expressioned lead voice is bolstered by superb backing voices that add massive depth and emotion. This is a wonderfully inspirational piece of work - oozing quality, dripping emotion and cutting a damn cool groove. 'Phoenix Soul' has a movie soundtrack feel to it - I can well imagine this song being used as a backdrop in a gutsy British 'cop' flik.

'Phoenix Soul' cleverly pulls together many genre without loosing its soul flavour and I can easily see this becoming a smoochy classic on dance floors anywhere. This is a very well thought out, superbly crafted and sensitively produced piece of work.
