Play 90 second soundbite of 'Ride Between The Eyes' @ 'CD quality'
This impressive release comes at you with hints of classic Rolling Stones, a controlled raw edge al la The Velvet Underground and just a touch of glam rock reminiscent of Roxy Music. Influences apart, these guys manage to come out still sounding original, fresh and exciting.
The title track opens and positively throbs its way into yer head; Jagger-esque vocals sit well with great riffs and elegantly poised bass and drums. Punk laced, catchy and commercial, 'Ride...' sets the tone superbly. More of the same with the excellent 'Desert's Gold' and the infectious and pacey 'Reverberate (Let It All Start)' - contemporary American soft rock with more than a touch of British-ness. Ending on a softer note with a naively country-rock feel, 'Keep All That's Love', The Soft Explosions show their diversity and strength of character. Cleverly and as their name suggests, The Soft Explosions come at you with gently punchy, almost quirky persuasion rather than full-on power.
'Ride Between The Eyes' maybe wholeheartedly American but The Soft Explosions show here that their music is trans-Atlantic and can easily cross 'the big pond' and appeal to a much wider audience - not always an easy thing to do. With this release The Soft Explosions showcase their excellent wares and demonstrate their potential to make a big impression wherever they're heard. They mix it up a bit and cross genre boundaries with ease; they sound like a complete package that'll appeal to all-comers - interesting stuff this!!
