Play 90 second soundbite of 'I Want You Back Now' @ 'CD quality'
The Singles have taken things back to basics, good, honest, genuine popified rock'n'roll as it was donkeys trousers ago - charmingly melodic, crisp clean sounds, sharp edged percussion, jangly guitars and superbly hooky choruses. The Singles have captured the exciting sounds of yesteryear and made them sound cool, fresh and amazingly 'now'. To name bands from an earlier era that The Singles could sound like would be totally wrong; The Singles are just The Singles and what a fine sounding trio they are!
Back to basics maybe but there's no way The Singles are a retro outfit either! The Singles make shit-hot pop music that's irresistible and oh so real. This album sounds absolutely brilliant in a home-grown sort of way; this aint an album that's been over-engineered nor produced to the hilt. 'Start Again' is absorbingly charming in its honesty and likeability; The Singles perform with what sounds like unbounded youthful energy but also unabated mature vitality. The end result is a bright and positive sounding hunk of work that's fascinatingly powerful and surprisingly enjoyable.
Several bands over the years have tried to achieve this feel - not many have really succeeded - until now! The Singles get it just right, nail it, zip it up and pound it out. 'Start Again' is simply divine stuff and such a pleasure to behold after years of ploughing through so many sound-alike so-called indie bands that tried but usually failed to make a statement and come up with something fresh. The Singles have managed to bring a homely reality back to pop music by learning from others' mistakes and keeping things relatively simple, clean-cut and believable.
'Start Again' by The Singles needs to be heard and deserves to do well - it's a little gem of an album that'll be getting quite a hammering on my CD player over the next few days and weeks. An excellent album, exciting, fresh and proper good!!
