Play 90 second soundbite of 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues' @ 'CD quality'
With just five tracks here it could be argued that this is a bit on the short side. However, the ethos of the night is one of 'praise be to Dylan' and it's celebrated through the coming together of like-minded muso's, poets, artists and Bobby addicts. So, The Royal Alberts' set opens and closes proceedings - 'Respectin' Dylan' takes snippets of The Royal Alberts' outing and lays them down just as it was; raw, loose but enthusiastic - and above all, worshipful!
The Royal Alberts are the latest in a long line of 'tributes' to the great man - each the brainchild of all-round nice guy and Dylan fanatic Pete Unwin (The George Cowley Experience) on vocals, guitar and harmonica. Here Unwin is joined by Clive Kennard (Groovyhead) on guitar and vocals, Jamie Shaw (The George Cowley Experience and Marr's Bar Jammin' House Band) on bass, Dave Gibbon (Funky Skunk and The George Cowley Experience) on drums and Harvey Wyatt (The George Cowley Experience and Marr's Bar Jammin' House Band) on keyboards. Together, these intrepid musical itinerants got themselves all rehearsed up just for this one gig on one night - and hey, that's a lot of work just for a one-off!.
So, what about 'Respectin' Dylan' then? Well, it's everything I'd expect from the gig really; the guys do a bloody good job here - sure, it's raw but the sentiment is there without a doubt and I can't help but feel that Mr Zimmerman would actually really appreciate the genuineness and homely grit of The Royal Alberts. Featuring 'Baby Let Me Follow You Down', 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues' (my personal Dylan favourite by the way!), 'Leopardskin Pill Box Hat', 'One Too Many Mornings' and 'Ballad Of A Thin Man', 'Respectin' Dylan gets the job done, maybe not with precision but certainly with gusto and dedicated passion.
Rumoured to be the last in the long line of Unwin fronted annual Dylan tributes, 'Respectin' Dylan' is a fitting and memorable way to bow out (if indeed this is the final time!). The guys did a great job at the event and 'Respectin' Dylan' very much captures the essence of the night. Long live the Dylanesque Pete Unwin and long may he continue to bless the music scene with his passion and dedication to one of the most influential singer songwriters of all time.
