The Respectables

CD - Sibley Gardens

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Charged By The Minute' @ 'CD quality'

'Sibley Gardens' is the second album release from Detroit power-popsters The Respectables; it's a lively, no-frills, pop-rocker that's flavoured with intense guitars, rammed with memorable hooks and overflowin' with commerciality.

Working from solid foundations provided by sensibly pounding bass and restrained but wholesome drums, The Respectables build their sound with respect for dynamic separation and audio clarity. The guitars, although ever-present, do just enough to lift but not drown the sound and that considered playing allows the throaty vocals to work their lyrical magic without the need for over-elaboration or over-exertion. The result is a bright overall sound that's easy to take and totally singalongable.

The Respectables make pop music that sounds mature and very well structured, they don't sell out to pop banality rather preferring to express themselves through well written songs, beautifully controlled instrumentation and crisp production. The Respectables don't put a musical 'foot' wrong here; their ability to take what is generally an honest and open pop form and inject Rolling Stones-esque grit and grind is excellent. There are eleven great tracks on this impressive album and just about all of 'em could be lifted and used as stand-alone single releases; such is the quality of The Respectables writing and dedication to their art. 'Sibley Gardens' demonstrates how classic pop songs can be lifted and sensitised by slipping in just the right amount of classic rock influences such as succinct soaring riffs, catchy fills and pained voices. 'Sibley Gardens' comes close to being pure rock but manages to stay just on the commercial side of the fickle dividing fence.

'Sibley Gardens' by The Respectables is everything a good pop album needs to be and should be; instantly commercially appealing yet sufficiently heavily loaded to be tantalising to the slightly heavier-heads who prefer to stick with things more rockin'! 'Sibley Gardens' by The Respectables is power-pop in its adult phase, pretty all-encompassing and truly tasty, it rocks as much as it rolls and has the ability to appeal to the 'popularists' who like their music a little more 'sweet' and instant - great album, clever band and one to watch out for maybe!
