Play 90 second soundbite of 'Shark' @ 'CD quality'
Boy do these guys persevere! But, it wasn't just perseverance that got The Pocket Gods onto the John Peel playlists - he saw the originality, creativity and potential of The Pocket Gods ages ago.
'Sandringtonsput' is raw, energetic and weirdly likeable. It still mystifies me somewhat as to why I keep enjoying this band. I think it's the pure guts and determination of Lee and Moeke combined with their genre defying (or should that be destroying?) take of rock music. Beneath the obvious rock overtones there's flavours of country, punk and blues to name but a few of the musical influences. It's really hard to criticise The Pocket Gods for what they do; theirs is indeed a raw but powerful way of performing and the songs can be remarkably good (if a little strange!). The Pocket Gods just keep coming back. But that's why they're now getting more radio air-play; they are, at last, starting to grind their earlier knockers into submission - starting to make themselves heard in 'higher' places! Good on 'em too!!
'Sandringtonsput' is another one of those 'strangely strange but oddly normal' releases to make you think. I've always enjoyed what The Pocket Gods are trying to do and 'Sandringtonsput' is another in a long line of Pocket Gods goodies. Purists - beware! Experimentalists - enjoy!
