Play 90 second soundbite of 'The Bells Of St Leonard' @ 'CD quality'
More mind altering heady vibes flow through the ether as the 'Gods' live their dream. Typically long tracks that carry the listener on hazy journeys through mystical soundscapes on an aural trip back in musical time. My feeling is that this is where The Pocket Gods really want to be musically. Theirs is very much a late 60's/early 70's sound and feel; it wouldn't surprise me if these works were chemically induced mind-fucks but whatever it is that provokes and motivates The Pocket Gods, it works for them. The opening number 'The Bells Of St Leonard' really sums up what I believe to be the true 'Gods' - gentle, thought provoking waves of drones and wails set against Indian-esque grooves and hypnotic rhythms resulting in a relaxing but exciting (for me anyway) trip.
Because this is a sequel to 'The Green Man' there's not a lot to say that I haven't already. This is how The Pocket Gods should be. I think that their creative natures make them hungry for recognition and some of the 'other' genres that they delve into are ways of making people aware of their existence so that the true Pocket Gods can become accepted. Yes, I believe that's what's going on.
'The Green Man Vol 2' is everything that Vol 1 was; an absorbing 'trip' of epic proportions - The Pocket Gods very much at home and in tune with themselves. Great stuff - but, unfortunately, not for everyone, not commercial, not 'now'.
If The Pocket Gods' continue to lay down stuff like this, I'll continue to listen and enjoy - but I will be amongst just a few. I can sense the frustration of wanting to be accepted for writing and performing music that is neither commercial nor generally accepted - something that you strongly believe in but just cannot get out there.
If only there were more 'ageing hippies' like myself and The Pocket Gods!
