Play 90 second soundbite of 'Telstar Gurl' @ 'CD quality'
Typically lo-fi, religiously true to form and Pocket Gods edict 'Jombal Portal' is raw edged and bloody-mindedly self-indulgent (in the nicest possible way!).
Prolific doesn't come anywhere near describing this duo (or is it trio - or quartet?) of altered-ego muso's. Time and again the outrageously in-yer-face and unnervingly likeable Gods simply throw themselves into the furnace of musical mayhem and then step out seemingly unharmed but keenly tempered ready to fight on. They just keep on coming at you - from all directions. Do they ever rest, ever eat, ever sleep? The Pocket Gods are a musical phenomena - surreal, totally out there somewhere - but where - who Knows!
So as you've probably guessed, this is not music for the purist - you've gotta be a bit 'spaced out' to really get The Pocket Gods. They refuse to conform. They blatantly defy all 'popular' musical doctrine. They are, quite simply, a legend in their own Corn Flakes.
'Jombal Portal' consists 'Telstar Gurl', 'Weekend Revulers', Sunday Song', 'VVBUD' and 'Jombal Party' - see what I mean? But seriously, (actually I was being serious!) The Pocket Gods do totally baffle the shit out of me coz they're just so persistent and somehow likeable for everything they try. If their recordings were absolutely spot-on I don't think they'd work quite so well - the fact that they knock out these home-made works helps to come to terms with what goin' down here.
'Jombal Portal' is short but nonetheless sweet. The tracks seem to just fly by. It aint ever gonna make The Pocket Gods rich beyond their wildest dreams but I'm sure there's a market-place for them and their material.
Joking apart, I'd be interested to hear just what these 'guys' could do and sound like if they were recorded 'properly'; I can't fault the songs nor the tireless commitment. Perhaps a compilation release 'The Pocket Gods Greatest Creations' would be an interesting way of testing the water. What an interesting thing that'd be!!
