Play 90 second soundbite of 'Sussex' @ 'CD quality'
Prolific music makers, they seem to come up with a completely new sound each time out. 'Brian' is no exception but perhaps vaguely more rocky than some of the things I've heard from them before.
Certainly, The Pocket Gods aren't afraid to take risks. Most of their recordings are pretty off-the-wall really - OTW maybe, but they actually write some clever and interesting stuff. Where I struggle is with the finished article; very lo-fi, under produced, often off-putting. And yet, I really like what The Pocket Gods do. They never cease to amaze me with their originality and experimental nature.
Now then, 'Brian' is more of the same really; a bit of 'sticking two fingers up' at contemporary music - harping back to 60's/70's experimental, progressive rock but with an almost tongue-in-cheek attitude. And, it's really their whole attitude that I admire. Even though their material is 'out there', which I also like, they keep coming back. Basically a duo with the help of drum machines they manage to belt out quite a big sound. The guitars are very much to the fore with keys/synths tucked just behind. There's nothing particularly brilliant about the vocals but somehow they're well suited - it all seems to work even though it really shouldn't.
So, the six tracks here, 'Sussex', 'Devestation Duvet', 'I Love The World', 'Night Lights', 'Sandringtons' and ' See You Next Tuesday', are a collective of modern 'underground' I guess. Whatever they are they annoyingly just keep coming back to haunt me. I still can't work out what it is that The Pocket Gods do that gets to me. Perhaps I'm as sad as them coz I love it!!
