Play 90 second soundbite of 'Pondfield Solstice' @ 'CD quality'
Mark C Lee is the brains and driving force behind this superb outfit and 'Pondfield Solstice' is a home-produced, four track, hour long work that opens the door into the slightly eccentric world of the main man. Eccentric maybe but, Lee seems to have a natural penchant for creativity and risk taking. Through its 'home-made' origins 'Pondfield Solstice' retains a uniquely modest overall production; it feels just as it should - never becoming or sounding even the slightest bit 'staged' or over-done. For that reason alone this is a very clever piece of work; when it would be oh so easy to take things to the extremes through the use of modern recording techniques, multi-tracking, over-dubbing and excess production 'Pondfield Solstice' has been carefully crafted and retains a certain, charming simplicity considering its inherent complexities. If that sounds like too much of a contradiction then I make no apologies. This is an exciting piece of modern, space-trippy rock that sends shivers down my ageing spine. This is right up my street!!
Following the opening title track we have here, 'The Golden Bough', John Barleycorn Blues' and 'The Ninth Configuration'. Each sufficiently removed from the other to be continually intruiing and inspired. An hour of controlled, mainly instrumental excellence that'll be hitting my player regularly from now on. A pure pleasure to behold!
Yes, you've guessed it - I like this! I love this!! I could be spoon-fed this for the rest of my days and die happy, maybe somewhat addled, but totally fulfilled. Excellent!!
