The Orkid

EP - The Orkid

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Try To Sell You Gold' @ 'CD quality'

I really like the sound of this outfit; The Orkid are four young ladies from Plymouth - combined age only just greater than my years!! It's a bit scary when you first hear a band of this quality and originality cuz I tend to think back to what I was doin' and what I was capable of at their age - not a lot!! Certainly nowt as creative and impressive as this!! The Orkid are, Abi (vocals, guitar), Liz (drums), Sadie (guitar) and Anna (bass), The Orkid four playing as one, The Orkid are pretty shit-hot!

Initially The Orkid tend to sound like any other indie outfit cuz it's a pretty straight-arrow guitar, bass, drums and voice kinda thingy but, listen-up, listen well, and it starts to sink in that actually, these girls aren't anything like the indie 'norm'; The Orkid have developed a sound and style all of their own. That sound, I have to say, is born out of the very individualistic sound of the lead vocals - there's something truly compelling in Abi's style, sound and delivery, she's got something quite special going on in them there vocal chords! But, it don't stop there either; The Orkid, once you're acclimatised and into their vibe, have actually come up with a signature sound that sets them apart from their contemporaries - and, I love it!!

The Orkid are as tight as a proverbial....well you know what I mean! They play with great unity and the result of all that solidity and empathetic understanding is one helluva tasty old sound. The nearest comparison I could make would be to point you in the general direction of Edie Brickell - similar, somewhat fractured vocal sound but The Orkid are probably slightly more rock oriented than Brickell and her New Bohemians. Add to that just a smidge of classic Kate Bush versatility and The Orkid sound starts to unfold before your very ears! And, it sure is a great sound!!

Again, it don't stop there; there are just four songs on this excellent EP but, what great songs they are. I'm really finding it hard to believe that, at the time if writing, the average age of The Orkid girls is still under seventeen - that really is scary!! However, age things apart, The Orkid show massive promise and great potential here; this is a classy EP that suggests The Orkid have got a bright and very rewarding future ahead of them - if they can churn out quality like this now, what the hell are they gonna be capable of when they grow up?! This self titled EP by The Orkid is pretty amazing and The Orkid sound like real special people, a fantastic band and an all-round musically impressive combo. Brilliant stuff this - one to watch out for methinks!
