Play 90 second soundbite of 'Iraqi Borders' @ 'CD quality'
This Warwickshire trio don't actually do anything totally new here but, what they do is extremely exhilarating and even though their rockin' way is simply good old British rock, they've got a head start over most of their contemporaries coz of frontman Ooid Nic!! Add in the great, unified musicianship and The Oolites become something quite special.
Ooid Nic Reast is an old mate of mine and for me, although I'm trying to be unbiased, everything he does is always brilliant and, without disrespecting the other two lads, it's Reast's input that makes the big difference here; the writing is typically brilliant and Reast delivers his swords with a style and sound all of his own. And, when you add in Ooid Reast's creative guitar work you've got yourself quite a front man!! But, every great frontman needs the support of an equally great back-line; scorchin' punctuative bass and more vox are dished out by Ooid Simon Blinkhorner with individualistic drums seriously thrashed out by Ooid Jim Williams - together these guys make one helluva sound and what'dya know, The Oolites are born!
Now, according to my research, Oolite is sedimentary rock formed from Ooids - so there you go three Ooids to one Oolite! There's one thing to bear in mind though; the term sedimentary rock suggests that Oolites would, by their nature and metaphysical make up, naturally sing to the bottom. No way Jose! Here we have Oolites that will surely defy the laws of physics and rise to the top. It's a shame that The Cream has already been done coz, of course cream rises to the top. Anyway, The Oolites definitely have a touch of magic about them as clearly shown with this excellent four track demo EP.
Tracks offered up here are, 'Abbey Fields', 'Snake', 'Last Night's Song' and 'Iraqi Borders' and together these four excellent songs are gonna set things up nicely for The Oolites to make their mark. The Oolites have a everything they need to become a real force within their field - certainly, in just these four tracks, their potential is easy to hear. With Reast's prolific songwriting output The Oolites should be able to build quickly and strongly from these solid and impressive foundations. The Oolites have the potential to be 'kin' big - you mark my words! The Oolites are as tight as a big thing in a very small space! The Oolites are as solid as a very dense thing that couldn't be any more solid! The Oolites are ready for it and up for it - great band, fantastic material, now lets make it happen.
This eponymously title demo EP from The Oolites is everything it should be and everything it needs to be; it's a tempter, a teaser, but a small hint of The Oolites capabilities, potentially a small piece of rock history in the making right here, right now! The Oolites get it spot on here - four superb tracks, one whole load of potential!!
