The Neutrinos

Single - Girlfriend's Got A Gun

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Girlfriend's Got A Gun' @ 'CD quality'

I have to admit that I found 'Girlfriend's Got A Gun' and its 'B' side, 'Donkey Work' to be odd choices for a single from The Neutrinos. Both are taken from The Neutrinos excellent album 'One Way Kiss' and both are strangely strange but oddly normal works.

Although both songs are enormously entertaining, I would probably see both of these tracks very much as album tracks rather than stand-alone singles. Now, that's not to say that 'Girlfriend's Got A Gun' or 'Donkey Work' aren't great tracks - they are! But, for me, neither really show the true spirit of The Neutrinos - they just seem really weird choices when compared to most of the rest of The Neutrinos work! Both give the impression that The Neutrinos are much more 'poppy' that they are. They almost sound as if The Neutrinos are toying with the music industry and making statements.

Ok, that's just me being super-critical coz I've just reviewed the album which blew me away and I also said that any of the tracks could be lifted from it and put out as a single!!. Well, as if to prove a point, here's tracks 3 and 9 - 'Girlfriend's Got A Gun' is a pretty punchy, slow rocker of a number. More Blondie than Siouxie - more pop than art-punk it takes a little while to pick up pace and Neutrinos grit but once it gets started you start to get the message. It's a slow worker that needs a couple of listens to really appreciate but once you've got it I tend to think you'll want more. 'Donkey Work' is similarly obtuse in its form and has a feel that's a bit like the B52's on acid. As it progresses it builds in intensity through Brian Wilson-esque vocal harmonies and a solid and infectious back-beat. Once again this one creeps up on you quite slowly which is why I find the choice slightly strange.

'Girlfriend's Got A Gun' and 'Donkey Work' are two very tasty tracks by the superb Neutrinos. Although neither really has instant impact, both manage to work themselves into yer mind and leave you asking questions. Slow starters and therefore strange choices but quite compelling and most enjoyable.
