The Mourning After

EP - Happy Endings Make You Weak

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Happy Endings Make You Weak' @ 'CD quality'

North London band The Mourning After are a "..mess of Indie, punk rock, new wave and electro.." kinda thing. Young and obviously energetic this four piece are trying to do something with a slightly different feel. From this offering, I can see where they're coming from but I'm not entirely sure that they'll quite got it nailed just yet. I like what they're doing but, for me, there's a little work still to be done.

'Happy Endings Make You weak', as an promo EP will serve them well - of that I'm sure. But, as a recording for the record buying masses it feels a bit under-done production wise. Instrumentally the boys do well. Vocally, although unique sounding, it's a bit loose and somehow scratchy. Certainly, I feel that this area could do with some work - not the style or sound but the finished recording.

There are three pretty good songs here; the title track, 'Burst The Bubble' and '2195'. All show youthful promise - all work to showcase the band's unusual take of 'nu-punk'. Punchy bass work set against punctuative drums drives the somewhat jangly guitars quite nicely throughout. The songs are maybe a bit naive sounding but that'll strengthen with time, age and experience. There no doubting the commitment of these guys though.

As an introduction to this outfit, 'Happy Endings Make You Weak' works pretty well. Only time will tell for The Mourning After; they show potential here and with hard work they should be able to grow and hone their skills to become a force to be reckoned with.
