Play 90 second soundbite of 'Maxi Jazz' @ 'CD quality'
With beautifully crafted and performed songs and The Midnight Mile's pretty unique style, this Demo is like a breath of fresh air in the current smog of too many 'indie' band that tend to sound alike. The Midnight Mile cite a similarly diverse list of current influences from The Smiths to Nizlopi to Ray LaMontagne and many more between. Some of those influences have clearly rubbed off on the band and although The Midnight Mile don't plagiarise there are definite similarities that creep in every so often. Now, that's not a bad thing coz if you can take on board the tried and tested works of some of the greats and use them to shape your original music, there's almost bound to be decent pay-off. Just so with The midnight Mile - theirs is a pretty 'now' acoustic-fest with breathy vocals from the sexy sounding Quinnen and poignant instrumental work all round this outfit seem to know what they're doing and where they want to be.
'Maxi jazz' opens this three tracker in some style with a, not surprisingly, underlying jazzy vibe. It's a cool track that's nicely understated and uncluttered and sets the tone and, it has to be said, the high standard for what's to follow. 'Gold' is a little tester that's nicely simple in it's construction yet has a complex feel; very much in the delivery style of Nizlopi it's a crackin' little piece. 'Courage' winds things up with a softly lilting nu-blues/folk feel. Once again The Midnight Mile keep the mix simple and concise allowing the vocals adequate room to express the lyrics. That's it, and in just three tracks The Midnight Mile have managed to get across their eclectic acoustic style and whet the appetite.
The Midnight Mile show strength of writing and extremely competent playing in just three shortish tracks. As a demo it's a great tool to demonstrate their worth and ability. Very nice indeed!
