Play 90 second soundbite of 'Disco Sucks' @ 'CD quality'
'Indie Disco Electro Pop' is how The Marches sum up this pretty funked-up take on pop modernity. And, there's no denying the effect The Marches' music has; not always bright and bouncy, it has to be said, but always with creative flair and a slight tongue-in-cheek honesty. Diversity seems part and parcel of The Marches musical remit; here nothing's certain, there's no single pop nuance that The Marches plump for - each track has its own identity, its own style, its own nuance - and don't that make a difference? Oh yeah!!
At first I thought The Marches was gonna be an instrumental gig - I soon got educated though and I have to say I love the lyrics, the slightly inward-looking humour of it all. Musically, well, The Marches seem to be focussed and totally in control; the whole sound and feel here is one of perfection and finesse. Beautifully mixed and produced without over-doing things, The Marches get it just about spot on. Lyrics aside, the vocals are handled beautifully; crystal clear and superbly weighted within the whole, everything is precise and accessible. Electro modern maybe but The Marches have clearly taken on board earlier influences as diverse as The Pet Shop Boys and The Beatles - the fun electro element of the former and the melodic and harmonious elements of the latter. This aint retro though; The Marches do thoroughly modern, not always dance either - The Marches throw their musical 'net' over a wide area and haul in a varied and wide ranging genre catch - from disco right through to reggae, it's all here.
Definitely one to watch out for when it finally gets released, The Marches album looks like it's gonna be a real gem of a work. If modern pop music is what turns you on then perhaps The Marches will be right up your street - with something for everyone it sounds like it's gonna be a big un!
