Play 90 second soundbite of 'Low Hundreds' @ 'CD quality'
The Lights' vibrant take on the alt/pop-rock form is wonderfully melodic and includes plenty of hooky character and joininable charisma. Their songs are mature yet youthfully vibrant and 'Low Hundreds' typifies their penchant for creating striking and memorable 'chunes'. 'Low Hundreds' features beautifully crisp vocals perfectly proportioned atop of some really bright and cheery instrumentation - all the i's are dotted and all the t's crossed but, as well produced as this song is, there's still a feeling of space and freedom within - it's a beautifully rounded and nicely formed single that has everything it needs to get itself noticed.
What a surprising 'B' side!! 'Formerly Yours' shows a much more deliberate and pained side of The Lights; simplicity personified, it relies on acoustic guitar and female voice to carry its venomous lyrical sting. It's a brave choice for a 'B' side as it's quite un-commercial in many ways but it certainly tells the listener that The Lights aren't just compositional light-weights - this is a song, despite its stripped-down nature, with a big 'bones' and loads of sentiment.
The lights have once again come up with the goods; 'Low Hundreds' is right on-the-money commercially and 'Formerly Yours' showcases The Lights' strength in depth. The Lights have everything ready to make their assault on the 'charts'; they just need that little bit of luck to move on up to another level - they're real contenders making 'proper' music and definitely deserve massive success!
