Play 90 second soundbite of 'The Vision' @ 'CD quality'
The Kut have an gutsy, honest feel about them; to compare The Kut to any other band would be a bit unfair - but I'll do it anyway! The Kut remind me, just a little, of Garbage (but with more hair!) with tiny touches of Portishead. Certainly, just like the former, The Kut generate a solid, rockin', industrial groove and like the latter they mix it up a bit and experiment with genre vibes and give their songs a dancey edge. The end result is one of attention grabbing fuzzy guitars woven with subtle keys set against pulsating and punctuative bass and drums. Maha's sultry, often dark sounding vocals add intrigue and a distinct, sensual grit - and it's all pretty compelling and nicely commercial.
It's tough out there for 'girl' bands unless they're flashing body parts all over the place. The Kut are aiming to do it the 'proper' way - through musical innovation, good musicianship and strong songwriting and that's where this excellent demo does exactly what it's supposed to do - through 'The Vision', 'Brother' and 'Don't Want You' it whets the appetite and gets the taste buds nicely dripping by tempting and teasing the aural senses rather than the hormonal ones (well maybe just a bit!). These girls have an unusual and fresh sound that gives them a definite edge. 'The Vision' suggests that 'Lies My Mother Told Me' should be pretty special.
