Play 90 second soundbite of 'Cold (Radio Edit)' @ 'CD quality'
This Nuneaton based four piece sell themselves as an 'alternative rock band' - I'm not actually totally convinced about the alternative tag though. For me 'alternative' must hint at their slightly different approach to commercial pop/rock/indie. 'Alternative', for me' normally conjures up thoughts of dark, progressive rock - The JD don't appear to be that at all. They are however a great sounding outfit that are trying to write and perform songs that seem to come from the heart and soul of the members - songs that contain a sort of multi-genre feel - bright, sublimely crafted and beautifully thought out. Certainly, 'Cold' starts with a sort of nu-folk thing goin' on then gently drifts into something of a light rock skirmish. There's elements carefully melded together here that, on paper, probably shouldn't work too well. But they bloody well do!
'Cold' is a crackin' little song that says much about The JD. This 'Radio Edit', for me is still a bit short - hey that's because I like what I hear and I crave more! 'B' side, 'Hidden Agenda' verges more on the pop/rock idiom. It's another stonkin' work that suggests that The JD are pretty strong on the writing side of things. Both tracks are handled with great aplomb; stunningly arranged with plenty going on but retaining superb clarity and feel. The JD suggest that they have a great future; they appear to lay down a very accessible style of music that will have a pretty wide appeal. One to look out for!!
