Play 90 second soundbite of 'Get A Little Dirty' @ 'CD quality'
Ironweed is the brainchild of Aniff Akinola and his beloved 'project' has kicked up quite a storm in the relatively short period of time since its conception. Sounding like a pumped-up, funky Muddy Waters, Ironweed makes music that's unmistakably original and instantly recognisable and his deep, rumblin', growning croon is given another great outing here with four re-worked tracks taken from his brilliant 'Dustbowl' album. Ironweed brings modernistic nuances of the delta and the bayou to popular music with his cute and foot-tappin' rockin' soul.
Like it or hate it you have to admit that Ironweed has plenty of presence and packs a mighty punch; his nu-take on what is loosely a blues theme is remarkably vibrant and pretty damn commercial. And, this excellent EP is once again treated with great respect by the production team leaving everything beautifully separated and crystal clear; of course, that 'voice' takes the obvious lead role but the use of blues-sided guitars is awesome, at times scathing and very hooky. Supported, as ever, by a pounding rhythm section that kicks out a real beefy, sassy backdrop, The Ironweed Project is as individual as it is innovative.
Genre-blurring and quirkily ear-catching, The Ironweed Project is like nothing else I know of. The guy's songs are superbly composed and brilliantly executed and the overall feel is just so enjoyably different. Ironweed's booming southern drawl would perhaps initially appears not to be commercial weaponry but The Ironweed Project is so fascinating that it actually works bloody well. 'Deep Down & Dirty' by The Ironweed Project is a crackin' release and if it can manage to get the public's attention is might just re-kindle album sales and lift The Ironweed Project's profile - and rightly so!!
