Play 90 second soundbite of 'Bedtime Stories' @ 'CD quality'
it's an infectious and honest beast of a work that's both seriously entertaining and earnestly commercial. With hooks aplenty, a vibrant feel and an easy attitude, The Hush Now music machine whirls effortlessly along and draws the listener in with intelligent, mature and yet blissfully irresistible songs.
Probably more pop than indie, 'The Hush Now' is bright and bountiful as it skips lightly but pleasingly through eleven quality songs, each (apart from the intro, track one) good enough to be released singularly and successfully. The Hush Now ply jangly guitars against metronomically-regular percussion; each song laced with sensitively delivered vocals positively dripping with pop sensibility. There's nothing at all obtuse or 'heavy' about 'The Hush Now'; it's an album that relies on melodic charm, irresistible choruses and uncomplicated but well structured arrangements to win over the listener. Uncomplicated maybe but, there's quite a lot going on actually - it's just that The Hush Now's take on the 'form' is so pleasing that it all sounds so beautifully concise and uncluttered.
Something like Mercury Rev meets The Feeling is where The Hush Now sound are coming from; the creative diversity of the former and the instantly recognisable formulae of the latter! Comparisons apart, The Hush Now are very much doing their own thing here, and doing it bloody well it has to be said. The Hush Now's music is extremely radio-friendly and nicely singalongable so, given good promo and decent air-time, it shouldn't be too difficult to get their wonderfully cheery stylee out there and buzzin' in the heads of new listeners wherever they're heard.
'The Hush Now' is as honest as the day is long, there's no pretence there, no hidden agenda; The Hush Now are givin' out pure indie-pop for the masses and doing it with great style and unified passion. 'The Hush Now' is rammed full of 'now' viable pop songs that're deep enough to satisfy the more discerning ear but similarly 'glib' enough for those who don't care about 'words' rather just wanting a happy 'noise' to whistle along to. 'The Hush Now' by the Boston band of the same name is an excellent example of pop biased indie music; take it as seriously or as flippantly as you want - it's great music which ever way you look at it - and damn commercial!!
