The Freed Unit

DVD Single - Winter Solstice (the Snowman Came Inside)

This charming seasonal offering tells the rather sad story of a snowman that escapes from the cold weather to take a nip of sloe gin with disastrous results. Thankfully very different from the normal Xmas releases, The Freed Unit have nicely captured the season without the usual jingle bells and sleigh ride themes.

The Freed Unit is an unusual, some might say bizarre, outfit described as performing "electronic-folk-synth-pop" and 'Winter Solstice...' takes the whole Christmas single thing to an altogether different level. They've done it with a sense of humour but retained their commitment to the musically unusual, and succeeded in laying down a very infectious piece of work.

'Winter Solstice...', unless it gets massive exposure, may not exactly set the world alight in 2006. But, I can easily see this slowly becoming a favourite - it may take time but it could just do it! After all, Nizlopi did it in 2005 with 'JCB' which could be said to be seasonally challenged. So, if The Freed Unit put their spooky hearts and souls into promoting and exposing 'Winter Solstice...' it could just about get there. Certainly, this excellent work deserves to be heard (and seen). The song itself is radio friendly and easy on the ear. The self-made animated video is equally entertaining and really brings the tale home. It's heartbreakingly quirky and for that The Freed Unit deserve recognition.

With its naive simplicity and nursery rhyme quality 'Winter Solstice (The Snowman Came Inside)' would grace any festive household - whether young at heart or longer in the tooth, this works for all. A superbly original piece of work that could just work, and work, and work....year after year! Excellent!!
