Play 90 second soundbite of 'Bill Hicks' @ 'CD quality'
'Bill Hicks' and its 'B' side, 'Come And Get You' both demonstrate the ballsy penetrative passion of The Foxes; brisk appears to be the order of the day coz 'Bill Hicks' is certainly an up-tempo, kick-ass track that gets the job done in no uncertain terms. Ok, 'Come And Get You' takes it down a few notches but there's still underlying pace and jauntiness in the delivery.
But, and here it is.........although lively and certainly more than a little catchy 'Bill Hicks' isn't, for me, an exceptional work rather, it's a bit too obvious and indie-normal - it doesn't say too much about The Foxes other than suggest a very competent and plausible indie-rock outfit. But, that can be said about hundreds, no thousands, of similarly ilked outfits.
Don't get me wrong, 'Bill Hicks' will probably do very well simply coz it's 'safe' and predictable. The Foxes deliver both tracks here with adrenalin fuelled verve and great competence but there's just insufficient originality for me to rave about either track. The Foxes have definite drive and energy but if the two songs here are typical, The Foxes aren't a band that I'll be looking out for too hard until they can find something that sets them apart from this indie normality.
'Bill Hicks' by The Foxes has a certain commercial pop appeal but just lacks that little bit extra that would make it memorable and truly exciting - a good single then rather than an exceptional one!!
