Play 90 second soundbite of 'The Curator' @ 'CD quality'
Using pretty big pulsing riffs behind the spoken word voices, The Ex-Men make electro cute; maybe slightly gimmicky for the real high-tech music lovers and possibly just too left-field for the pure pop market, The Ex-Men are seemingly a bit of a musical enigma! 'The Curator' is interesting enough and certainly made me smile, as did the 'B' side, 'Godot On Call Waiting' but, I'm not really sure who The Ex-Men are actually targeting with their shamelessly glib electronic outpourings.
The Ex-Men's music is full of powerful dynamics and packs a pretty hefty punch - max out the vol to really get the benefit though! As British as faggots and peas but probably not quite as palatable, The Ex-Men's rather different take on the genre leaves me unsure of where it's all going! 'The Curator' is certainly quirky and definitely an interesting work but, something is still leaving me just too cold for comfort. Sure, The Ex-Men are taking a somewhat different approach and have to be admired for their perhaps risky 'originality' but is there a big enough sector of the market to support such 'off-the-wall' offerings? I'm not sure.
Perhaps I'm struggling coz this is my first encounter with The Ex-Men. Perhaps there's a big following already fully adapted to their uniqueness. Perhaps I'm not seeing the bigger picture. Perhaps this is not actually typical of The Ex-Men!! Whatever, there's a first time for everything and, in my case, The Ex-Men have not exactly whetted my appetite with 'The Curator. Sure it's clever and sure it's well executed but, sure I'm still not sure!! Time will tell!
