Play 90 second soundbite of 'Drowning On Dry Land' @ 'CD quality'
Jones is making massive in-roads into the blues scene and has been likened to several of the big names from times gone by. His dusky and at times gravely vocal delivery adds a reality to the songs and his stunning guitar playing is second to none. Although I've never actually experienced the Carvin Jones show in a live scenario I've heard nothing but praise for what the guy accomplishes. 'I'm What You Need' seems to be a just and faithful reproduction of the Jones way; full of superb riffs and fills, soulful accompaniments and raunchy blues outings, this album should certainly go down well with any of his faithful followers. Carvin Jones virgins should also be able to get off on this work with ease - taking in several styles of the broad blues spectrum 'I'm What You Need' has all bases covered and is rammed full of emotional works.
Jones calls on his magnificent horn section and gritty keyboards to add real depth and dynamics to his deeply profound songs. There's plenty of up-tempo stuff on offer here which is well balanced with the 'dirty' slower blues and the album is thusly well proportioned and beautifully rounded. Generally well crafted but with the occasional tendency to drift into slightly over-instrumented passages that can sound just a tad 'crowded', 'I'm What You Need' is a superb work that suits high db levels - blast it out and feel the vibe right down to yer bones!
'I'm What You Need' reminds me of the horn influenced early works of Paul Butterfield ('The Resurrection Of Pigboy Crabshaw') where brass and ivories highlight the slick guitar sequences and add massive 'soul' to the blues genre. The Carvin Jones Band show here that the 'blues' can be many things, it can be whatever you want it to be - overall a mighty piece of contemporary rockin' blues, 'I'm What You Need' is a real pleasure to behold and equal to anything that's currently out there.
