The Brilliant Mistakes

CD - Distant Drumming

Play 90 second soundbite of 'The Day I Found My Hands' @ 'CD quality'

Ok guys, I'm hooked - and it took all of ten minutes to rope me in!! 'Distant Drumming' is the third album from New York catchy-popsters The Brilliant Mistakes; dripping with near-salacious hooks (well pretty orgasmic anyway!), rammed with feel-good melodies, overflowin' with sumptuous harmonies, the list goes on as the album unfolds and you find yourself trapped in its warm silkiness and captivated by its genre-blurring abilities.

Cleverly, although there's actually quite a lot going on, The Brilliant Mistakes manage to make their bewitching music sound ever-so simple and easy to take. The nucleus of the band is simply three extremely multi-talented musicians who are joined and bolstered, as and when necessary, by a few like-minded, similarly blessed and talented friends. The sound dips into the succulent realms of retro 60's/70's, bobs gently but captivatingly into 00's nu-country whilst retaining a hard and fast leaning towards good old commercial rock'n'pop. This aint just pop for pop's sake though, this is seriously mature pop; intelligent lyrics with depth, breadth and meaning, seriously grown-up melodies and brilliantly conceived catchy choruses - think The Beach Boys meets Squeeze with a hint of Poco on the side and you'll be kinda there or there-abouts!

'Distant Drumming' by The Brilliant Mistakes is mature pop music but probably not actually that commercial in the 'now' sense - I don't actually see this album kickin' the established, over-night sensation, bands into 'touch' - I see this as one of those very worthy contenders that kinda ends up taking a back-seat cuz of being just a bit too clever and therefore not appealing to the more fickle pop music buyer who's looking for the more obvious, the less thoughtful works. But, I can see 'Distant Drumming' by The Brilliant Mistakes being a stormin' cult success and getting hefty plaudits with the more 'underground' but also more discerning punters. I see 'Distant Drumming' as more of a slow worker, a grinder maybe that'll sell slowly but surely over a long period, a timeless offering with longevity written all through it rather than being an instant success and consequently gone and forgotten about by next year.

'Distant Drumming' by The Brilliant Mistakes is a magnificently put-together album of quite exceptional songs delivered with true professionalism and breathtaking proficiency. Faultless musicianship and outstanding production combine to make this an awesome album by any standards - a work of class and distinction certainly but maybe just too bloody good and too intelligent for the current, flying-by-the-seat-of-yer-pants, commercial scene.
