Play 90 second soundbite of 'Freakwenting' @ 'CD quality'
At times this six track gem sounds like it could be the late Syd Barrett in the 00's filling time by experimenting and playing around with sound and tape loops in the studio, looking for that certain something that's truly different and slightly madcap. Certainly Smith goes about this with an equally innovative mind-set and creates some blissfully enjoyable sounds for his troubles. What particularly jumps out is the wonderful discord here - its in-yer-face and blatant and because it's so up-front it sounds absolutely brilliant! For me, The Baps makes a special 'noise' and one which is totally attention grabbing - it sucks you in and you just can't help but listen coz it's all so unusual and off-the-wall! If you look on The Baps' Myspace site you'll see that for musical genre Smith has chosen 'Other' - quite right too - 'other' is spot-on!
Tracks here are, 'Pimpin' Baps', 'Freakwenting', 'Drunken Tai Chi', 'I.V.F.', 'Myspace' and 'Cheese' - each track challenges musical normality, each track is unique and, I have to say, quite brilliant! But, the tracks are quite short and the whole thing's over in less than fifteen minutes - that's too short man, there just aint enough of it!! I was just getting off on it and it all went quiet - so I pressed 'play' and set the whole thing in motion again.
'Baps' is a small but precious gem. 'Baps' is definitely off-the-wall and close to barkin'. But, 'Baps' is a great trip - now aint that the truth! I enjoyed my relatively short time with The Baps - every bloody obtuse minute of the 'experience' was worthwhile and somewhat educational. I think Mr.Smith is nicely off-his-head but I admire his courage and his invention. 'Baps' by The Baps is challenging but well worth a looksee. If you want something totally different and you like compositional invention and dynamic diversity then have a crack at 'Baps' by The Baps - it's bloody great!
