Play 90 second soundbite of 'Slap Happy' @ 'CD quality'
Taking their lead from Gorrilaz, Tenderhooks lay down some nifty grooves that incorporate commercial techno-rock with retro pop - and it works. Tenderhooks' way is to gently lull the listener, almost unknowingly, into submission. Their music is mature yet innovative, funky but easy on the ear - all-in-all, pretty damn good. Personally, I don't think that 'Slap Happy' is out and out the best track here because 'Tied On A String', 'Eco Warrior' and 'It Don't Get Any Easier' all vie for the listeners attention similarly.
Sure, 'Slap Happy' is probably the most commercially viable track; it's catchy, simplistic and certainly 'poppy'. But for me, 'Tied On A String' has just about everything; commercial appeal and an infectious quality but with more depth - a great little piece. 'Eco Warrior' too is superb, very experimental-retro-rock sounding (think early Hawkwind meets New Order). 'It Don't Get Any Easier' maintains the high standard with a sort of easy jazzy/blues vibe. As a whole 'Slap Happy' and its supporting tracks give a good account of Tenderhooks by showing their massive variation of styles whilst being very 'now' and extremely slick.
I see no reason why Tenderhooks shouldn't be able to reach heights they probably only ever dreamed of. Theirs is innovative, grown-up, pop which calls on cool vibes and original arrangements. Excellent!
PS - Tenderhooks' new album 'Eco Warrior' is now available from their website (www.tenderhooks.info).
