Play 90 second soundbite of 'Mr Booze' @ 'CD quality'
'Thirteen' is a punchy work that grinds its way into you almost unknowingly - it claws and grabs and pulls and tugs until you surrender to its unnerving but very enjoyable energy. It certainly benefits from max db and works brilliantly in the car although it can be a bit of a distraction when concentration on the road ahead is called for.
With hints of eighties retro tied in with ballsy and irritatingly chunky backbeats, Teenager go about their business with drive and vibrancy - there's a distinct feeling of nu-punk/pop about this band and 'Thirteen' makes for interesting listening. There's a very noticeable feelgood factor that comes through as the tracks unfold - I think these dudes really enjoy what they do and genuinely get off on it!
To sum up Teenager it's probably fitting that I quote from their press pack coz they describe themselves in no uncertain terms as, "Teenager is kinda like the name itself. Young and horny. Unpredictable. Loud. Drunk. Abusive in a loving kinda way. Schizophrenic." Put all that in the context of a contemporary pop album and you might just start to understand what 'Thirteen' is about!
'Thirteen' by Teenager doesn't actually open up much in the way of new avenues or navigate much new territory; most of what Teenager do has been visited to some extent by others before although some of the fun 'experimentation' is pretty excellent (I hope that's not too contradictory!). The main difference with Teenager is that they feel believable, like the real deal - like there's more than just a bit of pop sensibility growing inside - it feels structured, defined and focussed and there's more than a hint of humour hidden within. They certainly make me feel good as I listen and this is definitely a work that grows on you with time and plays.
