Play 90 second soundbite of 'King Of The Town' @ 'CD quality'
Callaghan, with his unapologetic rock'n'roll approach to pop music lays it all down here with near tangible enthusiasm and solid commitment to his beloved genre. 'King Of The Town' has its retro moments, that's for sure, but Callaghan generally gets it pretty spot-on. Vocally, Callaghan has it all sorted. Instrumentally, well, what can I say - he does it all here and does it extremely well. He sounds and feels very much in control and I think it suits him to have so much input - if you've got it, flaunt it!! The end result of Callaghan's varied and studious musical labours is a tastily punchy piece of rockin' pop that has instant appeal and smacks of big ambitions; one eye on the 'now' and the other focussed squarely on the future.
Ok, so 'King Of The Town' is a touch retro, it's close to glam-rock at times but, at the end of the day, I can't help but feel that Tabby Callaghan is so focussed on his beloved rock'n'roll that he's just gonna go for it straight and true, clichés 'n' all - and why not!! At least he's being honest to himself and he's not trying to fool anyone in the process; what you see is very much what you get with Tabby Callaghan - and for that I admire the guy massively!
Callaghan had (and hopefully still has) his followers and fans during the trials and tribulations of X-Factor. I'm pretty sure he'll be picking up many more 'friends' with this single which is a pre-cursor to a debut album in the not too distant future. I can see 'King Of The Town' being a minor hit for Tabby Callaghan. I think it's a great way to re-lay the foundations and prepare the public for his debut album and I can see that album doing rather well too. Like him or not, Tabby Callaghan's got something about him; he's open and up-front, there's a no bullshit approach that's honest and pretty cheeky and, the guy's got something that he believes in and he's gonna keep comin' at ya 'til ya surrender to his rock'n'roll onslaught. You might as well give in now coz Tabby Callaghan's not about to hang up his guitar just yet awhile!
