Play 90 second soundbite of 'Free Myself' @ 'CD quality'
Not only does this girl sing extremely well, she writes beautifully melodic songs that seem to cross genre boundaries as they flow smoothly through the ether. Thomas is neither simply 'pop', nor is she folk, nor is she soul or R&B - but what is clear is her ability to grab attention! This excellent single not only contains the stunning feature song, 'Free Myself (radio edit)', but Thomas goes on to prove her strength of writing with the impressive, almost simple sounding, 'Searching My Soul' - simple because of the uncluttered arrangement of acoustic guitar and tabla (and not a lot else) that punctuate Susy Thomas' great vocal delivery. Probably not as commercial as the 'A' side; more earthy, but equally likeable. The work plays out with 'Free Myself (instrumental)' which lets you hear just how good Thomas is at musical 'scores'; it takes you through soaring guitars and unfussy but dramatic orchestration - a really cool piece of music.
Susy Thomas has something different; classy - yes, sensual - without doubt, creativity - by the shed load, commerciality - she may actually be too good to get 'chart' placings in this fickle musical world! What is obvious is that Susy Thomas comes at a time when we are inundated with female R&B, she's going down an entirely different road - a road that the British music industry seems to have forgotten about - quality female singer/songwriters with something to say and loads to offer. I wish Susy Thomas well as she takes on the 'big guns' - she's as good as most and better than many. Certainly, I'll be looking out for more Susy Thomas releases - excellent!
