Play 90 second soundbite of 'Charlie Never Loved You Back' @ 'CD quality'
'Charlie Never Loved You Back', 'Queen Mary Blues' and 'I Am The Violence' are offered here and I have one simple thing to say, 'for fuck's sake play it loud!' Yes, this is one that'll piss yer Granny off big-style unless of course she's a nu-age rockin' Gran and her hearing aid batteries are on the way out; Super Sonic Hero lay down loads of rockin' riffs and stonkin' melodies with punchy undercurrents and great chunks of singalongabilty. Positively rammed with energy and aggressive attitude this demo definitely suggests that Super Sonic Hero have all the makings of a fine and pretty commercial outfit. My one criticism here would be that I don't really like the mix all that much; it tends towards the wishy-washy and it's a bit high-end at times and just needs a little bit of tidying up to take out some of the more extreme 'elements' that can be a little abrasive and harsh but, apart from that it works really well.
I'm not sure that Super Sonic Hero have truly found that all-important signature sound yet though, or certainly not in the studio scenario anyway; sure this is pretty full-on and raunchy but perhaps not quite as glam as they think. If Super Sonic Hero stay with what they've got they risk being just another very good pop-rock outfit. But, if they can find that elusive but decisive edge that can separate them from the hoards, perhaps the glam thing, they'll be able to stand alone and stand out. Yes, there is a hint of the glam-punk thing goin' on I suppose, perhaps their live set is more persuasive of their leanings but, I don't think this demo captures enough of that distinctive twee-ness associated with the genre. However, it's still pretty hot stuff and rocks all-day-long!
As a promotional demo this three tracker works pretty well and suggests that Super Sonic Hero is a band capable of generating a bit of rock magic in the live scenario. The band pack a pretty hefty punch that's gonna go down well in the mosh pit and they demonstrate damn good musicianship. Super Sonic Hero sound like a band that excels when playing live; it's always difficult to capture live energy and personality on the sterile medium of a compact disc - Super Sonic Hero get part the way there on this demo but I think more work in the studio is needed to make it 'real'. Three good tracks then from Super Sonic Hero; a good but not necessarily great demo, workmanlike and promotionally sound but just lacking slightly in true originality and possibly just failing to sell the band in their true light.
