Summer Holiday

EP - You Can Have It All

Play 90 second soundbite of 'U Can Have It All' @ 'CD quality'

Well, as soon as you get half way through this nifty little EP you realise that Summer Holiday are trying to be just a little bit different.

Summer Holiday are a three piece comprising twin brothers Packo (guitar & vox) and Tom (bass & vox) and Jamet 9mm (beats & electronic jiggery-pokery). As this EP begins, Summer Holiday sound like many other experimental indie bands. But, as the track unfolds there's something quirky and likeable going on with background samples and strings and 'things'. Certainly 'U Can Have It All' is the most tangible and commercial track here and I bow to their superior knowledge and concede that it's a great opener. Track two, 'U Can Have It All Slowly' is exactly what it says; low down and dirty, slow and grubby. Summer Holiday are playing with the aural sensors here and it just shows what can be done with a little tweaking and experimentation. Hey, this really works! Track three 'Criminal' straight away reminded me of Portishead; Summer Holidays' rather strange approach is really captured here in the grungy beats and noise-altered vocal of Janet 9mm (what a great name by the way). This is a cool EP with some great sounding voices, excellent musicianship, well thought out material and, thankfully, a big chunk of creativity and yes, I'm really impressed by what Summer Holiday are doing.

Congrats to Summer Holiday - trying something new, making it their own and making it work. This is a great introduction to what appears to be an up and coming, fascinating unit. If 'You Can Have It All' is anything to go by then Summer Holiday may just, one day, have it all!! Excellent!
