Play 90 second soundbite of 'Absolution' @ 'CD quality'
Sublimely recorded this stunning offering is yet another gilt edged piece of Sue Foley contemporary blues magic. Foley's squeaky-clean guitar performance features big-style but is never allowed to take over -
Foley knows exactly where things should sit - and she makes damn sure it all sits tightly and snugly in place. For such an accomplished guitar virtuoso Foley is remarkable for her ability to hold back - her guitar doesn't come screaming out at you, it just nestles beautifully within the sturdy musical framework of each song and seems to ooze its way into the mix. New listeners could easily fail to realise that this lady's axe is a real hard hitting killer tool - such is the deftness of her style.
Ok, so this girl's good! But what about the album? Well it's cool too! A rich mixture of twelve eezy blues 'chunes' that are just so relaxing to listen to. Whilst going through this album I never once started to feel like slitting my wrists - this aint that sort of blue! Foley's vocals, although not particularly rangy, contain just sufficient smooth-edged grit to remind the listener that she's a blues 'shouter' (in the best possible sense) with an unusual mixture of passion, hurt and reality. Sue Foley isn't your stereotypical blues 'shouter' though - she's got a young but sympathetic feel that is charmingly naive but workmanlike. There's absolutely no doubting her song-writing; these tracks are expertly crafted and further enhanced with stunning musicianship from the whole band.
'New Used Car' is an album of blues with a homely, wholesome feel; easy to listen to and with a real tasty coolness and feel. Superb stuff from this fantastic 'blues babe'.
