Play 90 second soundbite of 'Chrome' @ 'CD quality'
Stillman's organically fed and lovingly nurtured music is actually quite difficult to pigeonhole; suffice to say he errs towards intelligent pop-rock with a slight leaning towards nu-electric-folk. His delicate and sensitive voice trips lightly through his maturely poetic ramblings as a fusion of electric and acoustic instruments form the similarly delicate yet intricate multi-layered backdrop. And, with quite a lot going on instrumentally it's pretty amazing that Stillman manages to get his sensitive voice and wonderful words out through the intoxicatingly exotic soundscapes he creates. But, deliver he certainly does - with clarity and conviction Stillman emotes as he croons, his voice often taking the form of yet another instrument in the line-up, a new dynamic designed to add yet another layer - quite beautiful, quite brilliant.
Stillman's music has an inherent timelessness about it; his mature writing and thoughtful composition don't appear to have restrictive time-lines and I'm sure 'Blood Dark Sea' will sound as fresh, vibrant and viable in another twenty years as it does now. Stillman is indeed a very clever master of his trade and, scarily, I believe he's still growing, evolving - work by work album by album he gets stronger, more forceful - Stillman may not have become a household name just yet but that can't be too far away now - good promotion and some decent radio exposure will surely see Stillman reaping his just rewards through the release of this exquisite album.
'Blood Dark Sea' by Stillman is undoubtedly his finest work to date; Stillman is as good as anything else out there and far, far better than most! I'd like to think that 'Blood Dark Sea' will be the album that truly brings Stillman to the public eye and he starts to get the plaudits and rewards he so justly deserves. 'Blood Dark Sea' by Stillman is the mutt's nuts - the real deal - it really doesn't get much better than this!
