Morgan shows massive potential here with brilliant powerful songwriting and tangibly punchy but expressive performances. The whole alt folk-rock thing is a very competitive place to be but Steve Morgan shows he's got what it takes to become a leader in the field!
Steve Morgan writes and performs in a similar fashion to the great David Crosby and Stephen Stills; his use of hard-hitting lyrics accompanied by sweet jangly acoustic guitar with beautifully proportioned electric guitar running through is well conceived and superbly executed. Steve Morgan is quite obviously blessed in the writing department; his poetic words are sensitive but at the same time crunchingly realistic. Morgan lifts his words with empathetic playing that enhances but never takes over. And, Morgan has put together a great band to give him the support he needs and deserves; they sound totally in tune with Morgan's musically poetic plight and provide him with great, well rounded backing.
Steve Morgan's music is very 'now' and therefore currently commercially viable - he sits in the same musical brackets as Neil Young, Damien Rice and Ray Lamontagne; able to emote through well thought out lyrics and equally adept at ballsifying those words with superbly crafted instrumentation. Morgan can be sweet and pure or Morgan can be gritty and insightful; either way he's equally at home and puts just as much of himself into things. Somewhat 'timeless' in style and sound, Morgan seems well blessed in every musical department and seems to know how the put it all together pretty well too. 'Calmer Than Karma' by Steve Morgan isn't actually the best produced work I've heard recently but in a way they somewhat raw sound suits his delivery style by adding more grit to the mix.
Steve Morgan shows great songwriting skills with this pretty persuasive EP. As a musician he has all that's necessary to get out there and compete and certainly 'Calmer Than Karma' will win him loads of friends and admirers. Steve Morgan lays down the sort of powerful acoustic biased alt folk-rock that seems to go down well across the generations. He's gonna need that bit of luck to make it into the big-time but luck is clearly all he needs!! 'Calmer Than Karma' by Steve Morgan is an impressive and powerful EP; Steve Morgan sounds ready and up for it - whether solo and unplugged or electric and backed by like-minded musicians this guy's got what it takes - and aint that the truth!!
