Play 90 second soundbite of 'Spiral Of Violence' @ 'CD quality'
Three yes, but the rest is completely fictitious on my behalf; Soul Destruction make one hell of a metal 'noise'. Three people just shouldn't be able to create the decibels that Soul Destruction do!! And yet their press pack was all 'sweetness and light', very polite, very humble - ah, 'very 'eavy, very 'umble' - that rings a bloody big Dickensian bell - no more clues!
Ok, so we've probably established that Soul Destruction have come here via the metal rock road - true but, these guys are maybe a little more mature than most similarly ilked outfits. I reckon Soul Destruction have been around the rock block (and back again!) a few times and learned muchly on their travels. I'd put money on Mark Susans (vocals/bass), David Hobbs (guitars/b.vox/cello), and Simon Gerring (drums) having served longish apprenticeships within the heavy rock and prog rock scene. I'd also put a few quid on them having kinda driven into the metal forum more by accident than design - sort of grown into it? Soul Destruction quite obviously know their collective and individual ways around their instruments and also understand how to put sound together to create bigger, better sound. Why? Well, Soul Destruction seem to have more than a basic idea of what it takes to generate heavy electric music whilst still maintaining separation, focus, direction and, believe it or not, subtlety. They do manic and twisted just as well as they do cool and eerie. No communication breakdown here; these guys are bloody good - total masters of their art!!
'There's No Profit In Truth' is an excellent example of how metal music should be done; here we have some extremely well crafted heavy rock music that's built on electrifyingly solid foundations but then branches out with variation, juxtaposition, oppositional dynamics and, surprisingly, harmony. Soul Destruction do metal music with form and function; proper lyrics that you can actually hear, understand and join in with. They do melodic, they do rhythmic, and they do what they do superbly!! I'm impressed that this trio can create such a massive sound between them; most metal bands seem to want at least two or even three guitars blasting out simultaneously to get such a big groove. Soul Destruction show them how it should be done!! This is a bloody good album and Soul Destruction (despite their misleading moniker) really hit the spot!
'There's No Profit In Truth' by Soul Destruction is quite intoxicating and actually a pretty awesome work; Soul Destruction make metal music tangible, understandable and, above all, likeable! I'm amazed that this is their debut album coz Soul Destruction sound like they've been together for donkey's trousers - perhaps my guess at their potted history is nearer the truth than I thought!! Shit-hot album from one helluva motherfuckin' outfit! Great work - Soul Destruction should give lessons on how to create epic, anthemic metal rock music.
