Play 90 second soundbite of 'Summertime' @ 'CD quality'
'Dancin' In The Moonlight' I find just too ordinary, too middle of the road. It's widely recognised as a great song yet Soul Brothers don't seem to have given it anything from their heart. It lacks dynamics, it's missing that different something that says, hey, we're the Soul Brothers and we're a covers band with a bit extra. Really, for me, 'Dancin' In the Moonlight' is too weak for a demo unless you're aiming at Social Clubs and the low key cabaret scene.
'Summertime', is at least an attempt to move away from the original. It's actually a very pleasant version that's been given a great swing feel. Yes, it's a fantastic song anyway but to take it and make it sound different isn't all that easy but Soul Brothers have managed to inject a little of themselves into it here. The vocals are suitably laid back a sit nicely with the stylish, rhythmic vibe. It's a pretty good version that shows promise. Standing almost naked here with just one other track it sort of works - if it sat amongst four or five energetic tracks it would work even better.
So, as a demo for low profile venues, I suppose it's passable. But if Soul Brothers are going to be serious then I'd recommend a minimum four or five track collection of works to show the range of their repertoire and at least allow the listener to really get to where they're coming from. This demo just doesn't say or show enough about Soul Brothers - and I think there is more to show!
