Shatner

CD - Thirteen O'clock

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Irresistible Force' @ 'CD quality'

Shatner sound like a band that have seen most of the musical changes you could mention. Shatner sound like a band that have the ability to call on that vast experience and turn it to good use. Shatner lay down a very rich, full-bodied sound that suggests they're well honed, gig hardened and fully focussed. Shatner are not just yer run-of-the-mill indie-pop-rocksters; Shatner do the whole pop-rock thing with a certain maturity and experienced polish. Shatner do something that approaches polite-rock - very well conceived, extremely well crafted and beautifully delivered!

Shatner take pop-rock to new 'posh' levels and 'Thirteen O'clock' is a superb piece of pop escapism that's absolutely rammed with professionalism, overflowin' with quality and oozin' with just enough tongue-in-cheek charm to make a bloody big difference. 'Thirteen O'clock' is classy and boldly grown-up but also naively sumptuous. Actually, I just wonder whether Shatner end up putting themselves outside the commercial loop simply by being too stylish and too maturely creative. 'Thirteen O'clock' by Shatner is a real pleasure to partake of; Shatner up the ante here and seem to say bollocks to indie trite by putting musical finesse, educated story-telling and contemporary poetry back into pop-rock.

'Thirteen O'clock' comes as a bit of a surprise initially just coz it's so different to what most similarly ilked outfits are putting out. Yes, at first I took a step back in shock but it didn't take long before Shatner had pulled me back in and tied me down with their beautifully rounded almost charming take on modern pop music. This really is a classy piece of work and Shatner are quite clearly a pretty unique band. This six-piece musical pleasure machine from Leeds have not only put a smile on my face but also made me realise that 'indie' music doesn't have to be samey and corny - Shatner have put the adventure, the unexpected and the fun back into the genre and it really works well. This band play with intelligent unity, an understanding, a one-ness; no egos, no prima-donnas - just an brilliant ensemble of quite exceptional sounding musicians with just one goal - to create music that's one step beyond and two steps sideways- or, as they so succinctly put it, 'yesterday's band....tomorrow!'

'Thirteen O'clock' by Shatner is a little cracker; something to really sit back and enjoy not just for its beautiful honesty but for its stylish innovation, infectious charisma and charming creativity. A real gem of an album from a fantastic sounding outfit - I love it!!
